before IV Sedation

Please read the following instructions for IV sedation thoroughly and carefully. It is imperative that these instructions be followed for a successful surgery with IV sedation.

FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS MAY RESULT IN CANCELLATION OR RESCHEDULING OF YOUR SURGERY.

THE DAY BEFORE SURGERY

  • DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING (EVEN WATER) FOR 6 HOURS BEFORE YOUR ARRIVAL TIME FOR SURGERY. Diabetics should discuss an eating plan with Dr. Burns at the consultation appointment.

  • The last meal before fasting begins should be light and easy to digest.

  • Take any prescription medications (high blood pressure, thyroid, etc.) according to normal directions and schedule using only a small sip of water.

  • NO SMOKING OR VAPING for 24 hours before surgery.

  • DO NOT consume any social drugs, including marijuana, or alcohol for 24 hours before surgery.

  • Pick up any prescriptions provided at the consultation appointment for use after surgery.

  • Prepare a resting spot at home for the evening and days following the surgery.

  • Prepare recommended food and beverages for the evening and days following the surgery.

THE DAY OF SURGERY

  • Remember: NO FOOD OR DRINK FOR 6 HOURS BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT.

  • A RESPONSIBLE ADULT MUST ACCOMPANY YOU TO THIS APPOINTMENT AND MUST STAY ON OUR PREMISES DURING THE ENTIRE SURGICAL APPOINTMENT.

  • A hired driver (such as Uber, Lyft, or taxi) is NOT considered a responsible adult for purposes of accounting for the patient’s welfare and should not be solely responsible for the patient.

  • Minors (under 18 years of age) MUST be accompanied by a parent/legal guardian or responsible adult and must stay on our premises during the entire surgical appointment.

  • For the safety of all patients and to help surgeries commence promptly as scheduled, parents and escorts are not permitted to go back into the surgical suite prior to procedures. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

  • Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing and shoes. Short-sleeved shirts are required.

  • NO make-up, contact lenses, nor jewelry. NO flip-flops.

  • Do not pull your hair into a ponytail or clip that would interfere with your head reclining on the chair’s headrest.

  • If you wear any type of removable dental appliance (denture, retainer, flipper, night guard, etc.), bring it to the surgery appointment. You will be advised whether you can wear the appliance following surgery.

  • Bring your inhaler and/or EpiPen® if you require one.

  • Notify us if you have had any change in medications you are taking, medical condition, or illness, including fever.

  • To protect the privacy of patients, NO PHOTOGRAPHS NOR VIDEOS may be taken while patients are in the surgical suite.
